Four terms that are often confused.

A useful learning design vocabulary begins by separating explanatory theories from design models, teaching strategies and evaluation frameworks. They work together, but they answer different questions.

Learning theory

Explains how learning may occur: what changes, what mechanisms matter, and how the learner, environment and knowledge interact.

Instructional model

Provides a structured process or framework for designing instruction, courses or learning experiences.

Teaching strategy

A practical method or pattern of activity used to help learners reach an intended outcome in a specific context.

Evaluation framework

Helps determine whether learning, behaviour, performance or organizational results changed after an intervention.

Learning theory developed through overlapping traditions rather than a simple sequence of replacements. Newer perspectives often extend, challenge or reframe earlier ideas while older principles remain useful in the right context.

Instructional design models do not tell us one universal way to teach. They organize decisions about learners, goals, assessment, content, activities, feedback, media and evaluation.

Strategies are selected because they fit a goal and learner context—not because they are fashionable. Strong designs often combine explicit teaching, practice, feedback, social interaction and authentic application.

Learning science

High-value principles that cut across theories.

These principles are useful as design heuristics because they address memory, cognitive effort, practice, feedback and transfer. Their effectiveness still depends on the task, learner expertise and implementation.

Apply it

Choose by problem, not by label.

A good learning designer does not ask “Which theory is best?” in isolation. The stronger question is: “What must change, for whom, under what conditions, and how will we know?”

Five diagnostic questions

1. What must learners be able to do?Recall facts, make decisions, perform a procedure, solve complex problems, collaborate, or transfer expertise?
2. What do they already know?Prior knowledge changes the amount of guidance, examples, practice and complexity that learners can handle.
3. How authentic must practice be?For professional performance, realistic tasks, coaching and transfer often matter more than information exposure.
4. What constraints exist?Time, access, risk, technology, regulation, class size and facilitator capacity shape the feasible design.
5. What evidence will count?Match assessment to the intended outcome: knowledge test, observed performance, work product, behaviour change or business result.

A practical design recipe

  1. Define observable outcomes.Start with what successful performance looks like in context.
  2. Identify prerequisite knowledge and likely misconceptions.Design for the learner you have, not an imagined average learner.
  3. Select a theoretical lens.Use behaviourist tools for fluent routines, cognitive principles for mental models, social and situated approaches for participation and expertise, and so on.
  4. Design assessment before activities.Decide what evidence will demonstrate the outcome, then build practice that resembles that evidence.
  5. Sequence guidance and challenge.Model, scaffold, practise, give feedback and gradually increase learner responsibility when appropriate.
  6. Evaluate and iterate.Look beyond satisfaction. Check learning, transfer, behaviour and performance where the context allows.
Myths & cautions

Popular does not always mean evidence-based.

Learning design is full of memorable diagrams and simplified claims. Use models as thinking tools, but be careful when a neat visual is presented as a universal law.
